Rice hulls for better flow during mash-in
Rice hulls act as a neutral structural material in the mash tun. They create small channels through the grain bed so the wort can run off more easily, and the risk of a stuck mash is reduced.
They are particularly useful in recipes with a high proportion of wheat, rye, oats or other huskless ingredients. Rice hulls do not contribute significant sugar, colour or flavour to the beer.
How to use
Mix the rice hulls evenly into the crushed malt before mashing. They can optionally be rinsed with warm water first to remove loose dust.
Use typically 3–5 grams per litre of planned wort, or the amount necessary to make the mash more permeable. At this dosage, the package is sufficient for approximately 40–65 litre wort.
